Hollywood powerhouse Will Smith and rock legend Mick Jagger are among those who have joined efforts with Bollywood stars and other international celebrities to organize a four-hour concert on Sunday to generate funds for India to aid their ongoing COVID-19 battle.
India has been experiencing a surge in coronavirus cases, and the country’s cricket captain Virat Kohli, Bollywood actors Priyanka Chopra and Shah Rukh Khan are involved as they are set to either perform or read messages from their homes.
The show is organized by Bollywood directors Karan Johar and Zoya Akhtar. It will be live-streamed by Facebook and will pay tribute to workers fighting the pandemic.
The aim of the concert is to raise millions of dollars for more than 100 groups providing food and essential services during the coronavirus crisis.
According to the organizers, the money was for “those who have no work and no home, and do not know where their next meal is coming from.”
India has a population of 1.3 billion and they have been on lockdown since March 25. It is set to last till May 17, 2020.
The nation has so far recorded 37,335 cases of COVID-19, with 1,218 deaths. About 2,000 new infections have been reported in the last 24 hours.
