South African rapper Nasty C exudes the confidence that is required in the hip hop genre but had doubts when it was time for him to make his acting debut in Netflix’s second original African series Blood and Water.
The artist whose real name is Nsikayesizwe David Junior Ngcobo struggled to control his anxiety on the set of Blood and Water (he wrote and produced the series’ original song I Need You).
Nasty C plays a music producer in the Netflix show; that only required him to say a few lines. Even then, he had butterflies in his stomach when it was time to bring the character to life.
In a chat with Pulse via Zoom, the rapper opened up about how he felt stepping into the shoes of the character he portrayed on the series.
The young star revealed that he fought anxiety when he came on set and had to employ the services of an acting coach to help get his performance right.
As a first time actor, I was nervous at first but it is part of the whole experience. It wasn’t as stressful as I thought it was and not as stressful as I made it out to be. “
He also spoke about how his song I Need You is inspired by an experience he had as a child.
When I was growing up, my father’s side and my mother’s side were separated and so I grew up with my father’s so I didn’t really know my sisters till I was 13, 14. I also had a lot of questions like where are they, what really happened and you know you hear things but you never really know. It is like you are on this endless search for someone that should have been there your whole life and that’s what the song is really about”
Nasty C stated that his recent foray into acting is not a one-time thing and that there are opportunities to explore in the future.
I mean I would do it again as it is something that I have always been interested in. It’s not like the interest can just die like that and it is not like it was that difficult to bring my role to life. It was cool and easy for the most part. So who knows, in the future, I might do it again. Music is my first love but should the opportunity present itself and I feel like it makes sense one more time, I’ll do it.
Blood and Water is currently streaming on Netflix and tells the story of Puleng Khumalo (played by Ama Qamata), a girl whose transfer to another high school leads her suspecting that a girl she sees there is her sister who was abducted at birth. It was released on May 20, 2020.
