North Korea has confirmed that it blew up the joint liaison office shared with South Korea located near the border town of Kaesong.
The officer which was opened in 2018 to help the two Koreas to communicate has since been empty since January as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak.
South Korea’s Unification Ministry in Seoul confirmed that at 14:49 local time there was an explosion.
In recent days, North Korea has made several threats against Seoul and threatened to destroy the office if defector groups there continue with their campaign to send propaganda leaflets and other material across the border.
On Saturday, Kim Yo Jong, the influential sister of North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un, warned that Seoul will soon witness “a tragic scene of the useless North-South liaison office being completely collapsed”.
She also said she would leave to North Korea’s military the right to take the next step of retaliation against South Korea.
Before the explosion on Tuesday, the country’s military leadership confirmed it was ready to “turn the frontline into a fortress”.
