Singer Teni Apata has been criticised by a cross-section of Nigerians on social media for referring to Erica Nlewedim, a disqualified housemate in the Big brother Naija house as ‘Omo Igbo’ in a video.
The video which was made about 3 weeks ago started trending again on Wednesday after she made a tweet praising Igbo men for being a caring husband.
The phrase ‘omo igbo’ has generated an argument among Nigerians on twitter with the phrase currently trending on number 1.
See some reaction by Nigerians below:
Nobody will see anything wrong in Teni addressing Erica as "Omo Igbo" but if an Igbo celeb like Genevieve Nnaji addresses Laycon as "Onye ofe mmanụ" in a solidarity video for Erica just like Teni did, there will be outrage everywhere. Hypocritical lots.!

One of the people that turned this year's #Bbnaija into a tribal event is @TeniEntertainer.
She was praying for Laycon and referred to Erica as "Omo Igbo".
Imagine if it was an Igbo artist that referred Laycon as "Onye ofe mmanụ"

Many others however defended the singer by claiming being referred to as ‘omo igbo’ is harmless.
Teni called Erica “omo Igbo,” you are getting angry because this is Twitter.
Offline, people call people “Omo igbo” “Aboki” “Alhaja” etc and we all live in peace but once it’s Twitter, you all be moving mad and stupidly sensitive because you have 10mb data. Oshisco

I don’t see why Omo Igbo is causing any issue here
I am Chukwuebuka “omo Igbo” I have a lot of Yoruba & Hausa friends and even mentors.
Please let’s not pass this tribalism to our children.

If you can’t call this man “Aboki” don’t call any other person Aboki, Omo Igbo, Inyamiri or Onye ofe mmanu. pic.twitter.com/0yQkPlsyYi

Maybe it's just me sha but I've never found being referred to as Omo Igbo offensive.
Ofcourse I'm an igbo person and proud to be one.— CYBER DOBERMAN (@Baldilocks__) September 24, 2020
