NPHCDA Gives Guidelines For COVID-19 Vaccine Registration In Nigeria

National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) has on Monday, March 1 released the guidelines on registering for the COVID-19 vaccination in Nigeria.

It would be recalled that NPHCDA in a joint statement World Health Organisation (WHO), United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) announced that Nigeria is to take delivery of 3.92 million doses of AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine on Tuesday, March 2.

Delivery of the vaccines would mark the first arrival of COVID-19 vaccine in country and would also make Nigeria the third West African country to benefit from COVAX facility after Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire.

Giving more details about the expected vaccine doses, the national health agency announced guidelines on how Nigerians can have access to the vaccine.

Meanwhile, NPHCDA in a follow-up tweet stated that in the first phase of the vaccination, health care workers, frontline workers and strategic leaders would be prioritised.

Frontline workers include the military, police, oil and gas workers, Nigerians at border posts.

The 3.92 million doses of vaccine are part of the overall 16 million doses planned to be delivered to Nigeria in batches over the next months by COVAX facility as part of an unprecedented global effort to ensure equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines.

COVAX facility is co-led by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, WHO and the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations, with UNICEF as a key implementing partner.

It was launched in April 2020 to help ensure a fairer distribution of coronavirus vaccines between rich and poor nations.
