Chemicals, Not Gas Cylinder, Caused Abuja Explosion – Police

The Nigerian police say they found some combustible chemicals at the Sabon Garri explosion site which might be the cause of the explosion.

Odunews.com reports that an explosion rocked the Sabon Garri area of Abuja on Tuesday, 17th May which the Kano state government claimed was triggered by a gas cylinder.

There have been insinuations by some residents in the axis that this is false as some claimed that it was an attack by a suicide bomber.

Speaking to Arise TV on Thursday,  the Kano state Police Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Kiyawa, noted that the blast was ignited by some combustible chemicals stored in the building where the explosion happened.

He said that the preliminary investigation carried out by the police revealed that a welding shop is located in front of the collapse building and cylinders there could be the main cause of the explosion.

Kiyawa also noted that some combustible chemicals were retrieved from the explosion site which are suspected to be the cause.

According to the Police, the chemicals retrieved are Potassium, unidentified volatile chemicals and tobacco. The Police PRO stated that these chemicals will be taken for forensic checks.

He also revealed that no gas cylinder was recovered from the explosion site and the welder in front of the collapsed building was the first causality during the explosion.
