In Lagos State, police have arrested an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) attached to the Ajah Division for allegedly killing a female lawyer on Christmas Day.
On Monday, SP Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed the arrest.
Two other police officers who were with the ASP were also arrested.
It was an unfortunate and avoidable incident. The ASP who shot and two others with him have since been taken into custody.
“They will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, Yaba, for further investigation,” Hundeyin said.
According to the spokesman, the Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Mr Abiodun Alabi, has been in contact with the deceased’s family and the Nigerian Bar Association.
Hundeyin added, “Mr Alabi has given firm assurances that justice will prevail.”
A report by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) earlier said the incident threw the community into confusion as the suspected policeman and his team fled the scene.
The officer, however, was caught and detained by operatives of the Ajah police division.
The deceased, her sister, and four children were returning from a Christmas outing in their car at 11 a.m. when the policeman attempted to stop them.
The ASP allegedly shot at the woman’s vehicle as she attempted to make a U-turn under the Ajah Bridge.
“She was rushed to a hospital where she was confirmed dead,’’ the source said.
