Social media users have showered praise on a Nigerian student who wrote his Master’s dissertation on the lyrics of Afrobeats singer, Burna Boy.
The thesis which is titled ‘Nigerian Hip-Hop And Activism: A Critical Discourse Analysis of Burna Boy’s Monsters You Made’ was uploaded on Twitter by the student, Adelowo Adegboyega Muhyideen.
The work has generated positive reactions from a cross-section of users on the platform.
I did my MA thesis on @burnaboy lyrics and it came out beautiful!
Two of the many factors that pricked my curiosity:
1. Why is there so little research work on this GOAT who's arguably the biggest African acts of all time?
2. Why is the academia more concerned about… pic.twitter.com/LXIbHj870R— Gboye???? (@GboyeAdelowo) December 16, 2022
Speaking to OduNews about the work, Adegboyega said he chose to study the lyrics of Burna Boy because of the depth of the artiste’s lyrics.
In his words, “Burna Boy’s lyrics have indepth meanings and enough broad studies haven’t been conducted on these lyrics, that was why I decided to carry out this research”.
The project was completed December 2022 and submitted to the Department of English, University of Lagos.
An extract from the work-
I did a thorough analysis of the lyrics and I must confess, I'm glad I did. Consciously or unconsciously, this African giant, Burna boy, is not an ordinary singer. Odogwu is what he says he is and far more than that…???? @burnaboy https://t.co/dqKqy5b4qj pic.twitter.com/UT2p8sgHJy

Speaking further on the research, Adegboyega said the choice of the song ‘Monsters You Made’ is a a result of the socio-political happenings brought to light by the artiste.
He said the study opened his minds to the different personalities portrayed by Burna Boy in the lyrics of Monsters You Made.
“It was not too easy to carry out such a study considering the limited works on the lyrics of Burna Boy which could have served as a basis but thankfully, I bagged an A”, he added.
The project has since garnered over 30,000 impressions on Twitter with hundreds of retweets and likes.
