The Dnipro building strike was the worst attack on civilians in a single area since the autumn of 2022, and another 25 inhabitants remain unaccounted for.

During a 63-hour search since the strike on Saturday afternoon local time, emergency crews have cleared nearly 90% of the wreckage, according to Dnipropetrovsk region governor Valentyn Reznichenko.

There were 79 wounded people, he said, with 28 hospitalised and 10 in serious condition. Around 1,700 people lived in the multistorey building.

Some people were trapped on upper floors, signalling for help with lights on their phones.

The latest deadly Russian strike on a civilian target in the almost 11-month war triggered outrage and prompted the surprise resignation of a Ukrainian presidential adviser.

Oleksii Arestovich said the Russian missile was shot down by the Ukrainian air defence system and exploded when it fell — a version that would take some of the blame of the Kremlin’s forces.
