[ODUNEWS] January 27 – Mafab Communications has launched 5G services to a second city, Lagos, after being named one of the winners of the 3.5GHz spectrum in December 2021.
ODU News had earlier reported that the company turned on its network in Abuja earlier last week, and it has future ambitions to spread to Port Harcourt, Enugu, Kano, and Kaduna.
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) announced Mafab and MTN Nigeria as the winners of the 3.5GHz spectrum auction in December 2021. Each company paid USD273.6 million for the licences. While Mafab obtained a five month rollout extension from the regulator the month before owing to delays in issuing the operator a unified access service licence (UASL), which was also necessary to begin services, MTN went on to debut commercial 5G services in September 2022.
