According to a report by the New York Times, President Biden traveled secretly to Ukraine via train from the border of Poland.
The visit was kept confidential due to security concerns. The President left Washington D.C. without notice after having a rare dinner out with his wife, Jill, at a restaurant on Saturday night.
Prior to his visit, officials had denied that Biden had plans to visit Ukraine during his trip to eastern Europe.
The White House even released a public schedule on Sunday night showing the President still in Washington and leaving for Warsaw in the evening, despite the fact that he was already en route to Ukraine.
US President Joe Biden has issued a statement regarding his upcoming visit to Kyiv, stating that it will emphasize America’s commitment to Ukraine’s democracy, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. Biden further stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin was incorrect to believe that Ukraine was weak and that the West was divided when he launched his invasion almost a year ago.
The statement reveals that Biden and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will engage in an “extended discussion” on US support for Ukraine. Biden will announce additional “critical equipment, including artillery ammunition, anti-armour systems, and air surveillance radars” to assist Ukraine’s defense efforts. The statement further noted that more sanctions on Russia would be imposed.
According to the statement, a “coalition of nations” is providing “unprecedented military, economic, and humanitarian support” to help protect Ukraine. Biden assures that this assistance will continue, and it will not waver.
This statement by President Biden is a clear indication of the United States’ unwavering support for Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression. The upcoming meeting with President Zelensky is a chance for the two leaders to discuss ways to strengthen Ukraine’s defense capabilities and address the ongoing conflict in the region.
