According to reports, police in Awada Police Station near Obosi, Anambra State, killed three gunmen who attempted to set the station ablaze.
The gunmen were said to have been repelled by the police after a fire exchange. The incident was confirmed by the Press Secretary to Governor Chukwuma Soludo, Christian Aburime, who stated that two AK 47s and vehicles used for the failed operation were recovered.
In a statement titled “End of the road for another gang of murderers and arsonists,” Aburime said that the gunmen, who were identified as members of a criminal gang known as UGM, made a deadly attempt to burn down the police station. He commended the security personnel for their gallantry in repelling the attackers and taking down three members of the gang after the exchange of gunfire.
The incident underscores the ongoing security challenges faced by Nigeria, particularly in the southeastern region where criminal gangs, including the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), have been carrying out attacks on security personnel and government institutions.
The Nigerian government has been taking steps to address the security situation in the region, including deploying more security personnel and launching military operations against the criminal elements.
