Shortly after US Vice-President Kamala Harris made comments on Russia, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak met with Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission. Two key topics were discussed during the meeting: the Ukraine war and the Northern Ireland Protocol.
Sunak’s focus has been on negotiating new post-Brexit trading rules for Northern Ireland, an issue that has been a source of tension since its implementation in 2021. The joint statement released after the meeting stated that “very good progress” had been made on the matter, and that the leaders had a “positive discussion.” They agreed to remain in close contact over the next few days.
Additionally, Sunak and von der Leyen emphasized the importance of providing military support to Ukraine at this critical time, and both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to align their support for Kyiv.
It is encouraging to see leaders working together to address important issues and make progress on key matters. We look forward to hearing more updates on these ongoing discussions.
