Zamfara State Governor, Bello Matawalle, has signed a bill into law that establishes the Anti-thuggery Agency in the state. The Press Secretary to the Governor, Jamilu Iliyasu, issued a statement in Gusau on Sunday to announce the signing of the bill into law.

Governor Matawalle had set up a committee in February 2022 to tackle thuggery, drug abuse and related offences in the state, and later forwarded a bill to the state House of Assembly for the establishment of the state Anti-thuggery Agency, which was subsequently passed by the lawmakers.

According to the governor, the agency was established to complement the efforts of security agencies in curtailing thuggery-related cases in the state. He added that the agency would also help inculcate good morals in the youth towards a more decent society.

In addition, Governor Matawalle also assented to an amended law that sets up the state Area Development Councils. He stated that the Area Development Councils were created to bring people closer to the government and enhance development at the grassroots level in order to meet the aspirations of the electorate.

The governor expressed his gratitude to the Assembly for passing the two bills into law and for supporting the government in ensuring the overall development of the state. The establishment of the Anti-thuggery Agency is a significant step towards promoting peace and security in Zamfara State, and the signing of the amended law sets the stage for grassroots development in the state.
