The purported endorsement of Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde by the Labour Party has been met with controversy. Reports indicate that the state Chairman of the Labour Party, Mr. Sadiq Atayese, endorsed Makinde during a press conference on Sunday. Atayese said that the endorsement was due to the governor’s ideology, competence, compassion for the masses, and achievements in several sectors.
He noted that the 2019 presidential election showed that the Labour Party was a force to be reckoned with, and that a third-party party that emerged just a year ago had become a strong force due to the quality of its candidate.
He stated that no party could win the governorship election alone, and that the priority should be the emergence of a candidate that best served the citizens’ interests.
Atayese further noted that the party’s structure in the state remained intact, and that its Assembly candidates were still in the race.
However, the Labour Party’s governorship candidate in the state, Tawfiq Akinwale, said he remained the party’s candidate for the March 11, 2023, elections.
