Alleged Assault: Court Grants Bail To Seun Kuti

Seun was arrested on Monday; detained and arraigned after being filmed assaulting a police officer on the Third Mainland Bridge.

Adeola Olatubosun, chief magistrate, on Tuesday, directed the police to detain the musician for additional 48 hours and then release him on bail.

This was after the police had sought to get an order to further keep him in custody for 21 days pending the conclusion of its investigation.

She also adjourned the case until May 22 for mention and directed the prosecutor to duplicate the case file and forward a copy to the state director of public prosecutions for advice.

But on Thursday afternoon, Simon Lough, who led a police legal team to the court, requested for the extension, adding that it is to allow further investigation into the case.

In her verdict, the chief magistrate ruled that Kuti be remanded in police custody until May 22.

The police recently conducted a search at Seun’s home.

Benjamin Hundeyin, Lagos police spokesperson, said the agency “stumbled on certain suspicious things that have warranted the search”.

The singer is charged with assaulting a police officer.
