The European Union Election Observation Mission has formally presented its final report on Nigeria’s 2023 general elections to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The disclosure was made by INEC through its official Twitter handle on Monday.
The EU Mission was received by INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, along with the National Commissioners of the electoral body. The tweet stated, “The European Union Election Observation Mission, today, presented its final report on the 2023 general elections to the commission. INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, and National Commissioners were on hand to receive the visitors.”
Earlier, on February 27, 2023, the EU released a preliminary report highlighting concerns regarding the lack of transparency in the conduct of the general elections, which had resulted in a deflation of public trust in INEC. The report also pointed out that public confidence in INEC’s independence, professionalism, and voter information efforts had already decreased prior to February 25.
While acknowledging that the election took place as planned, the EU report identified operational failures that had posed challenges to the right to vote, consequently contributing to the erosion of trust in the electoral process.
