In an unfortunate incident on Thursday, eleven passengers lost their lives in a catastrophic accident on the high-traffic Benin-Lagos Expressway. A further eight victims are currently receiving treatment for injuries sustained during the crash, which happened amidst the Eid-el-Kabir festivities.
The deadly accident transpired when a truck traveling from Benin to Lagos collided with an 18-seater Toyota Hiace bus. Reports suggest the bus had slowed down due to road damage near the Ovia River Bridge when it was violently hit from behind by the truck. The bus was en route to Southeast Nigeria via Edo State.
Unconfirmed sources disclosed that several of the deceased had been on their way home after attending a gathering hosted by a well-known Lagos-based church.
Emergency medical personnel rapidly transferred the injured victims to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital in Benin for urgent care.
The Edo sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Paul Okpe, verified the tragic occurrence. He has urged drivers to maintain safe speeds, especially in areas known to have challenging road conditions.
