Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) has officially welcomed Spanish international Marco Asensio to its ranks. The signing was publicized by both parties a fortnight ago in Paris, but the official confirmation had to wait until June 30 when Asensio’s contract with Real Madrid officially expired. The new PSG coach, Luis Enrique, green-lighted the deal previously negotiated by Luis Campos and Nasser Al Khelaifi, PSG’s President.

Luis Enrique, who was recently appointed as PSG’s coach, is known to appreciate Asensio’s talent. The player had a key role under Enrique’s leadership during the last World Cup in Qatar, reinforcing his value in the eyes of the Asturian coach.

Leaving Madrid after a seven-season stint, Asensio embarks on a new journey in Paris, seeking more playing time, a pivotal role in the team, and a salary bump. The Spanish international’s salary has increased from €4 million at Real Madrid to a net figure of around €7 million at PSG. Jorge Mendes, the player’s agent for the past year, closed the deal which extends Asensio’s contract until 2026.

Asensio joins PSG as a free agent after an illustrious career at Real Madrid. He leaves the Spanish capital with a tally of 17 titles, 286 appearances, 61 goals, and 28 assists. Despite his impressive stats, Asensio failed to secure a spot as a permanent fixture in the starting eleven at Madrid, a factor which contributed to his decision to seek new pastures.

His departure from Madrid followed the club’s renewal offer that marginally improved his conditions, an offer which Asensio ultimately declined. Asensio, who played 51 games and scored 12 goals last season, is eager to make his mark in Paris and enhance his footballing credentials further.
