President Bola Tinubu will personally declare the rescheduled dates for Nigeria’s national population and housing census, initially postponed in April, according to the Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Nasir Kwarra.
Kwarra shared this information with State House Correspondents following a meeting with the President at Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja. The NPC delegation used this opportunity to present their report to the President, who will analyze the findings before determining the appropriate dates for the nationwide census.
The Census Chairman highlighted that further financial provisions will be required from the Commission as the delay of the exercise inflates its fiscal needs.
“We briefed President Tinubu fully on our preparedness level, the anticipated outcomes, and I can confirm that the President has generously agreed to support the Commission in the conduct of the census and our preparatory activities,” Kwarra said. He added that while the Commission is not in a deadlock, the President’s backing has inspired them to intensify their preparations.
Kwarra emphasized that the final decision on the census dates will come directly from President Tinubu, following a thorough review of the submission made by the NPC.
In the interim, the NPC has received assurances of support from the President. “He has given that to us and we thank him immensely for this, and for acknowledging the significance of data for national planning and development,” Kwarra elaborated.
