Human rights lawyer Femi Falana, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), has formally demanded a comprehensive coroner’s inquest to probe the circumstances surrounding the untimely demise of the renowned Afrobeat musician, Ilerioluwa Aloba, known to the world as Mohbad.
The shocking announcement of Mohbad’s death reverberated on September 12, 2023, sending shockwaves through the music industry and his legion of fans. His burial followed swiftly, occurring just a day later.
In an official communication directed to the Chief Coroner of the High Court of Lagos State, situated in Ikeja, Falana expressed profound disquiet over what he characterized as a “deeply tragic death.” He cited the Lagos State Coroner’s Law of 2007, particularly highlighting Section 15, which explicitly mandates the initiation of an inquest when a coroner is made aware of a death within their jurisdiction under violent, unnatural, or suspicious circumstances.
The detailed letter, made available to Vanguard, is dated September 18, 2023, and emanates from the esteemed law firm, Falana & Associates. In the missive, Falana and his legal team formally beseeched the Chief Coroner for Lagos State, stating, “We hereby implore Your Lordship to conduct a thorough and impartial inquest into the circumstances enveloping this tragic death within Lagos State. We are confident that Your Lordship will give utmost priority to our request and act with utmost urgency.”
The call for a coroner’s inquest into Mohbad’s death has triggered increased interest and speculation in both the legal and entertainment circles, as the public awaits further developments in the investigation. The quest for answers regarding the Afrobeat sensation’s sudden passing continues to mount, with Falana & Associates leading the charge in their pursuit of justice.
