In a historic judgment delivered today by the Presidential Election Petition Court, Vice-President Kashim Shettima lauded the ruling as a testament to the unwavering trust that Nigerians place in President Bola Tinubu and his administration. Following nearly 15 hours of anticipation, a 5-member panel of justices, presided over by Justice Haruna Tsammani, affirmed the legitimacy of Tinubu’s presidency.

Addressing the press immediately after the court’s decision, Vice-President Shettima extended his gratitude to the Nigerian people and the leadership of the ruling party who had gathered at the court since 9 a.m. He emphasized the significance of the moment and conveyed President Tinubu’s intention to issue a formal statement soon.

Shettima stated, “Our energetic chairman and national secretary of the party, members of the national assembly, ministers—they have all been here. One cannot adequately convey our debt of gratitude to the Nigerian people. My principal will issue a formal statement, but we felt compelled to talk to you after spending nearly 14 to 15 hours in this chamber.”

Highlighting the importance of unity in Nigeria, the Vice-President declared, “What binds us together supersedes whatever divides us; let us unite as a people and face our common challenges. As I have always said, the trajectory of global growth is facing Africa, and Nigeria, the greatest black nation on earth, will make or mar that trajectory.”

While acknowledging the day’s lengthy proceedings, Shettima emphasized that it was a momentous occasion. He praised the Nigerian judiciary for demonstrating its commitment to justice and fairness, stating, “It is a battle between the will of the people and the forces of misinformation and disinformation, but democracy has finally triumphed like the bird phoenix, rising from the ashes resolute and unhindered.”

The Vice-President underlined the ongoing nature of democracy, emphasizing that it required the resolve, intent, and commitment of the people to safeguard the will of the citizens. He said, “Democracy is not a destination but a journey.”

Responding to questions about his campaign promise to “retire political tourists to Dubai,” Shettima indicated that the campaign era was over, and it was now time for governance. He also displayed respect for elder statesman Atiku Abubakar and expressed the intention to tap into his wealth of experience to propel the nation forward.

In addition to Vice-President Shettima, Governors Yahaya Bello of Kogi and Hope Uzodinma of Imo, along with several other governors and top government officials, were present in court throughout the proceedings. They remained in the courtroom from the beginning until approximately 10 p.m., witnessing the final judgment in the three petitions challenging the outcome of the February 25 presidential election.

Today’s verdict will undoubtedly be remembered as a landmark moment in Nigerian political history, solidifying President Tinubu’s position as the leader of the nation and setting the stage for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for Nigeria.
