The Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, reportedly narrowly escaped an assassination attempt on Sunday as he traveled from Lokoja, the capital of Kogi State, to an official engagement near Abuja.
The shocking incident occurred just a few kilometers away from the country’s capital, Abuja.
The startling revelation which sent shockwaves throughout the region came to light through an official statement issued by the Kogi State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Mr. Kingsley Fanwo.
The attack transpired around 4 p.m. local time, and Commissioner Fanwo indicated that the assailants had disguised themselves in “military uniforms.” In a carefully orchestrated operation, they intercepted Governor Bello’s convoy and unleashed a hail of gunfire upon the governor’s vehicle, as well as other vehicles in the convoy.
Swift and courageous intervention by the governor’s security personnel ultimately thwarted the malevolent plans of the assailants. This life-threatening situation unfolded at three distinct locations, with the last barrier being situated near Kwali in the Federal Capital Territory.
Commissioner Fanwo emphasized that reports of these shocking attacks have been meticulously documented and submitted to state and national security authorities for immediate, comprehensive investigations. The aim is to prevent any such incidents from occurring in the future and bring the perpetrators to justice.
Fanwo stated, “We are not oblivious to the fact that certain elements are bent on painting Kogi as unsafe, particularly with the upcoming Governorship Poll slated for November 11, 2023. As an administration, we will spare no effort in ensuring that our citizens are not subjected to security threats by desperate politicians who are sponsoring violence and terrorism.”
In light of this distressing event, the official statement called upon the people of Kogi State to remain vigilant and to promptly report any suspicious activities within their communities to the relevant security agencies. The government reassured its citizens that the hard-earned peace that has prevailed in Kogi State over the past eight years will not be sacrificed on the altar of violent politics.
This shocking incident underscores the need for heightened security measures and vigilance in the region, as authorities are committed to preserving the safety and wellbeing of the people of Kogi State.
The investigation into the assassination attempt on Governor Yahaya Bello is ongoing, and the nation anxiously awaits the outcome of this crucial inquiry.
