In a solemn announcement that has sent shockwaves through the legal and political spheres, Professor Ben Nwabueze, an esteemed Constitutional Lawyer and the former Secretary-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, breathed his last on Sunday evening, October 29, 2023, at the age of 94.
His passing was confirmed by his family spokesperson, Eni Nwabueze, who revealed that the legal luminary passed away peacefully at his residence in Atani, Anambra State.
Born in 1931 in Atani, Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State, Prof. Ben Nwabueze’s illustrious career left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s legal landscape. As a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), he was widely recognized for his expertise and commitment to constitutional law. His profound legal knowledge earned him the distinguished title of “Oduah Afo-na-isagba of Atani.”
The family spokesperson, Eni Nwabueze, conveyed the news with profound sadness, stating, “With great sadness, we announce the passing on to celestial glory of our patriarch, Professor B. O. Nwabueze SAN, NNOM, CON, pioneer Secretary-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo and the Oduah Afo-na-isagba of Atani, Anambra State, on Sunday, October 29, 2023, aged 94. He lived an exemplary life of consequence. Burial arrangements will be announced in due course.”
In addition to his legal prowess, Prof. Ben Nwabueze was an influential figure within the Ohanaeze Ndigbo organization.
Chief Damian Okeke-Ogene, the Vice-President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, also confirmed the news of his passing and expressed deep condolences. He praised Nwabueze’s dedication to the progress of Nigeria, emphasizing the immense void left by his death.
Chief Okeke-Ogene stated, “It is a great loss both to Nigeria and the Igbo nation. He was a very decent constitutional lawyer and minister par excellence. He was known for being vocal and ensuring an anti-corrupt system. Indeed, the evolution of the entire legal system in Nigeria would not be complete without mentioning his invaluable contributions.”
