Renewed Violence in Ebonyi State Claims Lives and Destroys Property

Tragic violence erupted once again in Ikachi village, Akparata, Effium, Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and the destruction of property worth millions. The victims, Obinna Aje (19) and Ogenyi Abowu (78), were brutally beheaded, and seven people were kidnapped, with five houses burned down.

Dr. James Agena, President General of the Effium community, issued a statement attributing the attack to suspected Ezza warriors. “I write to put you on notice that this morning at about 3 am, alleged Ezza warriors attacked Ikachi village,” he stated. “This latest attack is in addition to the Ezza warriors’ assault on Effium Urban last Sunday, where one Mrs. Cecelia Omah was killed and beheaded.”

The renewed hostilities have reignited the crisis that began in 2021, which has claimed many lives and displaced numerous residents. Dr. Agena called on the Ebonyi State government and security agencies to “promptly arrest and prosecute all those involved in this genocidal act.”

Police spokesperson ASP Ukandu Joshua confirmed the attack and announced an ongoing investigation. He noted that the Effium axis remains a volatile area despite the presence of military and police units.

This violent episode precedes an upcoming peace committee meeting scheduled for May 21, 2024, to discuss the government’s White Paper on the Effium crisis. The ongoing conflict underscores the urgent need for a resolution to restore peace and stability to the region.
