The Organized Labour in Enugu State has commenced participation in the nationwide indefinite strike by shutting down several key facilities, including government offices and the Akanu Ibiam International Airport. Other affected facilities include the state water corporation, the Enugu State Waste Management Authority (ESWAMA), banks, government hospitals, and courts.
Reports indicate that as early as 6 a.m. on Monday, members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) were actively enforcing the strike.
Enugu NLC Chairman, Comrade Fabian Nwigbo, who spearheaded the enforcement, informed the press that all government offices in the state had been closed. He further mentioned that both the power sector and banks were also shut down.
Nwigbo stated that they planned to proceed to the airport to ensure no flights operated.
“Our enforcement team has successfully locked down the State Secretariat. We also visited the Ministry of Lands, cleared out the workers, and locked the gate. The team is now heading to the Akanu Ibiam International Airport to halt any planned activities,” he said.
He noted that a nationwide power outage had occurred as the National Union of Electricity Workers removed staff from the national grid.
Nwigbo urged workers to remain at home to ensure the strike’s success, emphasizing the importance of this action in compelling the government to meet Labour’s demands.
He assured that enforcement efforts would persist and called on affiliated unions to assist in the enforcement while leaders monitored compliance.
