The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Kano has put forward a proposal for mandatory drug tests for couples planning to marry, aiming to reduce drug abuse in the state.
NDLEA Commander in Kano, Mr. Abubakar Idris-Ahmad, announced the initiative on Thursday to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
“The agency has introduced the Drug Integrity Test Initiative, which is anticipated to metamorphose into an anti-drug culture for every Nigerian,” he said.
According to Idris-Ahmad, the drug test will act as a preventive measure against drug abuse, providing early detection of drug use among individuals and couples for timely treatment and rehabilitation. He emphasized that this proposed law is crucial to addressing the high rate of marriage breakdowns and reducing drug abuse among married couples in Kano.
“Investigations have shown that one spouse often introduces the other to drugs after marriage, affecting their children and hindering efforts to combat drug abuse,” he stated.
The NDLEA commander called on the Kano State House of Assembly to enact legislation mandating drug tests before marriage. He urged women, youths, and the general public to avoid drug abuse and collaborate in efforts to improve the state and nation.
“The test initiative approach seeks to tackle drug abuse at its roots, promoting a healthier and more sustainable society,” Idris-Ahmad added.
