Nigeria Suspends Import Duties on Maize, Wheat, Rice, and Cowpeas

On Monday, the Federal Government announced the suspension of duties, tariffs, and taxes on certain essential food items imported through land and sea borders. This initiative, aimed at mitigating food scarcity and high prices, was revealed by the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, during a press briefing at the National Press Centre in Abuja.

Kyari stated that the following food commodities will benefit from a 150-day Duty-Free Import Window:

  1. Maize
  2. Wheat
  3. Husked brown rice
  4. Cowpeas

The suspension of import duties on these key food items is expected to ease the burden on consumers and improve food security in the country.
