Supreme Court Grants Financial Autonomy to Local Governments

The Supreme Court has ruled that the Federal Government must now directly pay funds allocated to Local Governments to the democratically elected officials managing these areas.

In a lead judgment delivered by Justice Emmanuel Agim, the court also declared it unconstitutional for State Governments to withhold and use funds meant for Local Government Areas (LGAs) on their behalf. This ruling aligns with Section 162(3) of the Constitution, which mandates the direct transfer of these allocations to LGAs.

The ruling came as part of an ongoing judgment in a suit filed by the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), advocating for full autonomy for Local Governments.
