Officials at the Kuje Medium Security Custodial Centre in Abuja have apprehended a woman, Precious Yusuf, for attempting to smuggle drugs to an inmate. The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) command spokesperson for the Nigerian Correctional Service, Adamu Duza, announced the arrest in a statement on Wednesday.
According to the statement, Yusuf disguised herself as a visitor but was caught during a routine search by correctional service officials. The drugs were hidden in food packs.
“This occurred on Tuesday when the above-named lady came in the guise of a visitor to an inmate. During the usual routine search by officers of the Kuje Custodial Centre, items suspected to be Indian hemp and other dangerous drugs were concealed in food packs in a carton. The culprit confessed to having been sent to bring this to an inmate of the custodial centre,” Duza explained.
Following her confession, FCT Command’s Controller of Corrections, Ibrahim Usman, ordered that Yusuf be handed over to the Nigerian Drug Law Enforcement Agency for further investigation and prosecution. Usman also issued a stern warning to others contemplating similar actions.
“Those planning to perpetrate the same crime should desist. Our officers and men are on alert to deflate such plots,” Usman cautioned, emphasizing the vigilance of the correctional service in preventing the smuggling of illicit substances into custodial centers.
