Ahead of the planned nationwide protests scheduled for Tuesday, October 1, pan-Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere, has voiced its support for the demonstration, affirming that it is within the rights of Nigerians to express their grievances. The protests coincide with Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day anniversary and are driven by widespread economic hardship and hunger affecting many citizens.
In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Jare Ajayi, on behalf of Afenifere Leader Chief Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, the group emphasized the importance of peaceful protests. “It is the right of the people to do so,” Fasoranti said, while urging demonstrators to avoid looting, destruction of property, and harm to individuals.
Afenifere also called on the government, led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to increase efforts in key areas like security, agriculture, education, and the economy. The group stressed the need for improved infrastructure and service delivery, urging state and local governments to take full advantage of their fiscal autonomy to better serve their communities.
In the statement, Afenifere praised Nigerians for their resilience during these challenging times and expressed optimism for a brighter future. The group acknowledged the modest progress made since independence but emphasized that much more needs to be done to improve the welfare of citizens.
