Falconets Exit FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup After Defeat to Japan

Nigeria Falls 2-1 to Japan in Quarterfinals, Extending Winless Streak Beyond This Round

Falconets Exit FIFA U20 Women's World Cup After Defeat to Japan

Nigeria’s Falconets have been eliminated from the ongoing FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia after a hard-fought 2-1 loss to Japan in the quarterfinals. Despite a late push, the Danjuma-led squad was unable to overcome their opponents.

The Japanese team took control early in the match, with Miyu Matsunaga breaking the deadlock in the 33rd minute after receiving a well-placed pass from Rihona Ujihara. The first half, which was largely devoid of clear opportunities for both sides, ended with Japan ahead.

Japan continued to dominate after the break, and Maya Hijjikati doubled their lead in the 63rd minute. Despite the pressure, Nigeria struggled to find their rhythm and allowed the Japanese side to dictate the pace of the game.

The Falconets managed to pull one back late in the match, with Olushola Sobowale finding the net after a well-timed cross from Goodness Osigwe. However, the goal proved to be nothing more than a consolation as Japan held on to their lead to secure the win.

Nigeria’s exit marks another disappointing end to their World Cup journey, having not progressed beyond the quarterfinals since reaching the final in 2014, where they lost to Germany.
