Ogun State Government Suspends Teacher Over Student’s Death, Launches Investigation

The Ogun State Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology has suspended a teacher from Obada Grammar School, Obada, Idi-emi, following allegations that corporal punishment administered to an SS2 student, Master Monday Arijo, led to his untimely death. The teacher in question was also immediately taken into police custody for further investigation.

The incident, which took place on Friday, has sparked widespread attention. Ogun State officials have promptly issued a query to the school’s principal, Mrs. Tamrat Onaolapo, for allowing corporal punishment despite state regulations prohibiting such disciplinary measures. The principal has been given 24 hours to respond and justify her actions or face possible disciplinary action for contravening government rules on student welfare and discipline.

In an official statement, the Ministry expressed condolences to the Arijo family. A letter signed by the Permanent Secretary conveyed the state’s sympathies, describing Master Monday Arijo as an outstanding student who will be deeply missed by his classmates, teachers, and the broader school community. The Ministry assured the family that the case would be thoroughly investigated and promised to deliver justice for their son.

“We pray that the family finds the strength to bear this irreparable loss and that the departed soul rests in peace,” the statement added, reinforcing the government’s commitment to a swift and fair investigation into the incident.
