Anti-Corruption Agency Clarifies Viral Wedding Video Involved Different Family; Summons Issued to Groom and Others

EFCC Debunks Naira Abuse Allegations Against Senator Goje’s Daughter

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has dismissed allegations linking Mrs. Fauziya Danjuma Goje, daughter of Senator Danjuma Goje, to naira abuse during a wedding in Kano. The EFCC’s clarification followed a viral video showing naira notes being sprayed freely at an event, which led to widespread accusations and calls for accountability.

In a statement released on Monday by EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, the anti-corruption agency confirmed that the incident captured in the video did not occur at the wedding of Senator Goje’s daughter. The EFCC clarified that the event in question took place during the wedding reception of Amina Babagana Zannah, daughter of Hajara Seidu Haruna, popularly known as Hafsat Gold Nigeria, a jewelry business owner with locations in Abuja, Kano, and Dubai.

“The attention of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has been drawn to a viral video where the nation’s currency, the naira, was freely sprayed at a wedding ceremony in Kano, Kano State on Friday, October 24, 2024,” Oyewale stated. “Allegations of naira abuse were imputed to Mrs. Fauziya Danjuma Goje, daughter of Senator Goje, by Nigerians from all walks of life, including an editorial by a leading and respected national newspaper.”

According to Oyewale, the EFCC promptly investigated the matter and determined that the naira abuse depicted in the video occurred at Zannah’s wedding dinner. Haruna, the bride’s mother, confirmed the authenticity of the footage and acknowledged that it was recorded during her daughter’s celebration.

Further details from the EFCC revealed that the bridegroom, Ibrahim Mohammad, hails from Niger Republic. Oyewale noted that the spraying of naira and dollar bills at the wedding was carried out by members of the groom’s family. In response, the EFCC has summoned Mohammad and others implicated in the currency abuse to its national headquarters in Abuja for further questioning.

“The Commission has invited the Nigerien groom, Mohammad, to report to its national headquarters in Abuja, along with everyone who sprayed naira notes at his wedding with Zannah,” Oyewale stated. “While the EFCC appreciates the awareness its campaigns against naira abuse are generating across the country, it will not act against anyone wrongly accused of an alleged offence. The Commission remains steadfast in this campaign and will spare no offender, regardless of their position.”
