WASHINGTON, D.C., Nov. 16, 2024. President-elect Donald Trump has elevated two of his campaign loyalists to head communications roles in his upcoming administration, positioning them at the forefront of his messaging strategy. Steven Cheung, who served as Trump’s campaign spokesperson, will step in as White House communications director, while Karoline Leavitt, the campaign’s national press secretary, has been appointed press secretary.

In announcing the appointments Friday evening, Trump highlighted Cheung’s steadfast support and Leavitt’s dynamic presence. Both are familiar faces within Trump’s political orbit, having contributed significantly during his campaigns and first administration.

Cheung’s Strategic Role

Cheung, a former director of strategic response during Trump’s first term, is set to reprise his role as a staunch defender of the president. Known for his aggressive yet behind-the-scenes approach, Cheung has played a critical role in shaping Trump’s communication strategy. Despite his behind-camera focus, Cheung is active on social media, where he ardently backs Trump.

The role of communications director under Trump has historically been marked by high turnover, with six individuals holding the title during his initial presidency. Among them, Anthony Scaramucci’s brief 11-day tenure remains infamous. Notably, both Scaramucci and another former director, Stephanie Grisham, have since distanced themselves from Trump.

Before joining Trump’s team, Cheung was a spokesperson for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), an organization with close ties to the president-elect. UFC President Dana White, a longtime Trump ally, spoke at the Republican National Convention earlier this year.

Cheung’s appointment reflects Trump’s trust in his unwavering loyalty and ability to manage communications amid controversy. He previously handled messaging during high-profile incidents, including a dispute at Arlington National Cemetery, though promised video evidence of the event remains unreleased.

Leavitt’s Return to the White House

Karoline Leavitt, who previously served as assistant press secretary in Trump’s first term, will now take the lead role at the podium. A vocal advocate on the campaign trail, Leavitt has been instrumental in rolling out Trump’s staff and Cabinet announcements, some of which have sparked significant debate.

Leavitt brings experience from her stint as communications director for New York Rep. Elise Stefanik, who Trump recently tapped as the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. Additionally, she made a foray into electoral politics in 2022, securing the Republican nomination for New Hampshire’s 1st Congressional District before losing to Democratic incumbent Chris Pappas.

In a statement, Trump praised Leavitt as “smart, tough, and a highly effective communicator.” Leavitt expressed gratitude on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “Thank you, President Trump, for believing in me. I am humbled and honored. Let’s MAGA!”

Sergio Gor’s Appointment

The Trump transition team also confirmed the appointment of Sergio Gor, a close Trump ally, as assistant to the president and director of presidential personnel. Gor, who has been a key figure since Trump’s first campaign, will oversee critical staffing decisions in the new administration.

“Steven Cheung and Sergio Gor have been trusted advisors since my first presidential campaign in 2016,” Trump said. “I am thrilled to have them join my White House as we Make America Great Again!”
