Authorities in Libya have uncovered a mass grave containing the bodies of 28 migrants near a detention facility in the southern desert region of Kufra. According to a statement from the Libyan Attorney General’s Office on Sunday, the grave was found north of the city, where dozens of migrants had been illegally detained.
Security forces rescued 76 migrants from the facility, believed to have been operated by a gang involved in human trafficking. The victims were reportedly subjected to severe abuse, including torture and inhumane treatment.
Kufra, located near Libya’s borders with Egypt and Sudan, is a known transit point for migrants attempting to reach Europe. However, Libya’s unstable security situation, exacerbated by years of civil war, has allowed armed groups and criminal networks to flourish. These groups often collaborate with certain state agencies, exploiting migrants through forced labour, sexual trafficking, and other serious human rights violations.
Human rights organizations have frequently reported atrocities against migrants in Libya, including unlawful killings, forced recruitment, and systematic exploitation. The recent discovery highlights the ongoing crisis faced by vulnerable migrants trapped in these dangerous networks.
Investigations are underway as Libyan authorities seek to dismantle the trafficking operations responsible for these heinous crimes.
