Enugu Governor Mbah wins health workers’ award for healthcare investment

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has received recognition from the Medical and Health Workers Union for his administration's commitment to improving healthcare delivery across the state. The award acknowledges the governor's deliberate policy choices to prioritise health infrastructure and worker welfare during his first years in office.

Mbah explained that his government allocated fifty percent of its total budget to health and education over a three-year period. This substantial funding represents a conscious decision to address the state's healthcare challenges and build a stronger foundation for public health services.

The governor outlined how the budget allocation strategy directly supports the expansion of healthcare facilities and the improvement of working conditions for medical professionals. By dedicating half of available resources to these two critical sectors, the state aims to reduce the burden of disease and create better employment prospects for health workers.

The Medical and Health Workers Union recognised these efforts as tangible progress in a sector that has long struggled with inadequate funding and poor infrastructure in many Nigerian states. The award signals the union's approval of the governor's approach to treating healthcare as a priority development area rather than an afterthought in budget planning.

Enugu State's health sector has historically faced challenges common to many states across Nigeria, including staff shortages, aging equipment, and limited facility capacity. Mbah's administration took office with a mandate to reverse these trends through systematic investment and policy reform.

The governor's commitment extends beyond monetary allocation to include workforce development and retention strategies. Medical professionals in the state have reportedly benefited from improved remuneration packages and better working environments under the current administration.

The fifty percent budget allocation to health and education over three years represents approximately 150 billion naira in combined spending if the state's annual budget hovers around the 100 billion naira mark. This scale of investment positions Enugu among states taking healthcare expansion seriously as a development priority.

Mbah is expected to continue this funding trajectory in subsequent budget cycles as his administration pursues its medium-term development goals. The Medical and Health Workers Union indicated that ongoing dialogue with the governor will monitor implementation and accountability in the health sector.
