Group attacks Atiku over comments on Jonathan’s experience

A civil society organization has attacked Atiku Abubakar, the former vice president and a national leader of the African Democratic Congress, over recent remarks he made about former President Goodluck Jonathan's experience in office. The Goodluck Jonathan Legacy Project said Atiku's comments were unfortunate and revisionist in their nature.

Juan Amechee, who serves as the national coordinator of the group, released a statement on Thursday criticizing Atiku's position. Amechee said the former vice president's remarks misrepresented Jonathan's track record during his time as president from 2010 to 2015.

Atiku's comments appear to have been made in relation to the 2027 presidential election, with the former vice president seemingly questioning Jonathan's readiness or experience for high office. However, Amechee's response suggests that such criticism fundamentally mischaracterizes Jonathan's tenure and his proven administrative experience.

The Goodluck Jonathan Legacy Project exists to document and defend the achievements of the former president during his administration. The organization has previously responded to various criticisms of Jonathan's presidency, particularly regarding his handling of the economy, security challenges, and national development projects.

Atiku Abubakar served as vice president under former President Obasanjo from 1999 to 2007 before running for president multiple times. He was the ADC's presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections but lost to the ruling All Progressives Congress candidate Bola Tinubu.

Goodluck Jonathan's presidency was marked by various policy initiatives and development projects, though it also faced significant challenges including the Boko Haram insurgency and economic difficulties. His administration oversaw major infrastructure projects and attempted reforms in the power sector.

The clash between Atiku's camp and the Goodluck Jonathan Legacy Project reflects broader political tensions ahead of the 2027 election cycle. Both figures represent different political perspectives and their supporters continue to debate their respective records and contributions to Nigerian governance.

Amechee's statement is expected to generate further discussion among political analysts and commentators about the comparative track records of Nigeria's recent leaders. The organization may release additional responses if Atiku makes further comments about Jonathan's experience or credentials.
