The All Progressives Congress will announce the winner of its presidential primary the day after voting ends, with the declaration set for May 24. The party scheduled the primary itself for Saturday, May 23, and party leaders will gather for the result announcement the following day.
The event will draw party bigwigs, members of the National Assembly, and officials from the Independent National Electoral Commission. These observers will witness the tallying and declaration of results in what the APC described as an open process.
Two major candidates have emerged in the race for the APC's presidential ticket. Bola Tinubu, the former Lagos State governor, and a trader whose name sources did not fully clarify are the leading contenders. Both men have been campaigning hard to win delegates' votes across the country.
The APC's decision to announce results within 24 hours of voting reflects pressure from party members and the public for transparency. Previous primary elections have faced criticism over delayed result announcements, which fuelled accusations of behind-the-scenes manipulation.
Party officials said the May 23-24 timeline would allow time for proper counting while meeting the electoral calendar. INEC, which oversees Nigeria's elections, will be present to ensure the process meets national standards.
The winner of the APC primary will face the candidates from other parties in the 2023 presidential election later in the year.
