Troops of the Guards Brigade arrested a suspected spy and four impostors in separate operations across Abuja on Saturday, the Nigerian Army said on Sunday. The arrests came during coordinated sweeps by the 176 Guards Battalion and Guards Brigade Garrison aimed at tightening security around the capital's sensitive locations.
Soldiers on routine patrol near the Presidential Wing of Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport intercepted the suspected spy loitering in a restricted area. They recovered a wallet containing two ATM cards, receipts and passport photographs from the suspect, who remains in custody pending investigation.
Hours earlier, troops arrested four men dressed in military camouflage at Gwarinpa, near Dantata Estate in Abuja Municipal Area Council. The four men were suspected impostors attempting to pose as soldiers. Security operatives recovered a ballistic helmet, fragmentation jacket, dagger, two motorcycles, four mobile phones and other items from them.
The army said both operations formed part of its wider effort to prevent criminal elements from infiltrating the FCT and compromising security at key installations. All suspects remain in detention while investigations continue. The military did not disclose what the suspected spy was attempting to do or provide further details about the impostors' alleged plans.
