A former minister in Muhammadu Buhari's government has been advised to defect from the All Progressives Congress following a disputed primary election, sources close to the politician said on Wednesday.

The minister, whose name was not disclosed in the initial report, contested for a party ticket but lost in what observers described as a contentious primary process. Political associates have since counselled him to abandon the APC and seek his political fortune elsewhere.

The development reflects deepening tensions within Nigeria's ruling party as it approaches the 2025 election cycle. The APC has faced repeated complaints from aspirants about primary conduct, with several candidates alleging manipulation and lack of transparency in the process.

Insiders say the former minister, who held a significant portfolio during Buhari's eight-year tenure, still commands a substantial following in his constituency. His departure from the APC would signal another crack in the party's unity, coming months after similar defections by other prominent members.

The identity of the minister and his intended destination party may be made public in coming days as political realignments accelerate across the country. Party leadership has not yet commented on reports of the impending defection.
