A respected Islamic scholar and preacher, Murtadha Gusau, has called on Muslims to embrace the spiritual lessons of Prophet Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son as an act of devotion to Allah.
Gusau, speaking during a Friday sermon, described Ibrahim's actions as an unmatched example in religious history. He emphasised that the prophet's story demonstrates how love for Allah should supersede all other attachments, including bonds with family and children. The scholar pointed to Quranic verses in Surah al-Nahl, verses 120 to 122, as the scriptural foundation for understanding this pivotal moment in Islamic tradition.
The sermon centred on reviving the Sunnah, or practices, associated with Eid al-Adha, the Islamic festival that commemorates Ibrahim's sacrifice. Gusau urged the Muslim community to reflect deeply on what the historical event represents beyond the ritual slaughtering of animals during the celebration.
His message comes as Muslims worldwide prepare for Eid al-Adha observances, a period when the sacrifice of Prophet Ibrahim is remembered and honoured. The scholar's call emphasises the need for believers to internalise the spiritual dimensions of the festival rather than focus solely on its ceremonial aspects. By doing so, Gusau suggested, Muslims can derive greater spiritual benefit from one of Islam's most significant annual occasions.
