Lagos, Cairo airports lead Africa’s air traffic surge in May

Africa's 10 busiest airports handled record passenger numbers in May 2026, with Lagos and Cairo's facilities commanding the lion's share of the continent's booming aviation market.

The surge reflects deepening demand for both regional and international flights as more Africans travel for business, leisure, and trade. Airlines across the continent have expanded their routes and capacity to keep pace with the growing appetite for air connectivity.

Lagos, home to Murtala Muhammed International Airport, retained its position as Nigeria's primary aviation hub, processing thousands of passengers daily. Cairo International Airport, serving Egypt and the wider North African region, similarly dominated traffic figures across the continent's northern corridor.

The expansion of Africa's aviation sector comes as governments and private investors recognise the economic potential of improved air connectivity. Airlines have invested in modern aircraft and expanded their networks to tap into growing middle-class populations with disposable income for travel.

May's traffic data underscores the continent's recovery from pandemic-related disruptions and signals sustained growth in the aviation industry. Industry analysts expect this momentum to continue as more routes open between African cities and to international destinations.

Airports across the continent are investing in terminal expansions and improved ground services to manage the increasing passenger load. Several have announced infrastructure projects worth billions of naira aimed at doubling capacity over the next five years.
