Nasarawa governor Sule wins APC ticket for Senate race

Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has secured the All Progressives Congress ticket to represent Nasarawa North Senatorial District in the 2027 election.

Sule's emergence as the APC's senatorial candidate marks a significant shift in his political trajectory. The governor, who has held the executive office in the state since 2019, is now positioning himself for a move to the National Assembly as the next election cycle approaches.

The development signals Sule's intention to contest for the upper chamber of the legislature, stepping away from the governorship race. Political analysts say his senatorial ambition reflects the common pattern among Nigerian governors who seek to continue their political careers at the federal level after completing their tenure at state level.

Sule's ticket win came after the APC primary process in the senatorial district. The outcome puts him in pole position to represent the zone in the Senate if he wins the general election in 2027. Nasarawa North comprises three local government areas: Lafia, Obi, and Doka.

The governor's move to the Senate could reshape the political succession in Nasarawa State, opening the way for other politicians to contest for the governorship in 2027. Political watchers in the state are already speculating about who might emerge as the APC's gubernatorial candidate to replace Sule.

Sule will face the opposition's candidate and other parties' nominees in the 2027 senatorial election. His political structure and resources as a sitting governor are expected to give him considerable advantage in the contest, though national political dynamics and voter sentiment could still influence the outcome.
