The National Democratic Coalition has zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to northern Nigeria, a decision that comes weeks after Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso joined the party from the Labour Party and NNPP respectively.

The announcement marks a significant shift in the opposition party's strategy as it attempts to consolidate its base ahead of the next general election. By restricting the presidential race to the north, the NDC signals its intention to unite northern political heavyweights within its fold and present a formidable challenge to the ruling All Progressives Congress.

Obi's exit from the Labour Party where he was the 2023 presidential candidate sent shockwaves through Nigeria's political landscape. The former Anambra governor had polled significant support in urban centres and among younger voters during the last election. Kwankwaso, who contested as the NNPP flag bearer in 2023, brings his own political machinery and northern roots to the NDC. Both men represent potentially strong presidential material for the party in 2027.

The zoning decision effectively narrows the field of potential NDC presidential candidates to politicians from the 19 northern states. This strategy allows the party to leverage the combined political networks of Obi and Kwankwaso while appealing to northern voters who have traditionally been a critical voting bloc in presidential elections. The move also addresses concerns within the NDC about maintaining regional balance and preventing the kind of internal crisis that derailed other opposition parties.

Political analysts say the zoning arrangement could force other northern politicians currently in the APC to consider defecting to the NDC. Several former governors and serving senators from the north have expressed dissatisfaction with the APC's internal politics. The NDC's signal that the presidential ticket is available to the north may prove attractive to these figures.

The party is expected to formally announce its campaign structure and begin consultations with potential candidates in the coming weeks. Obi and Kwankwaso are widely expected to play key roles in the campaign even if neither becomes the ultimate presidential nominee. The NDC's National Executive Committee will meet to finalise the zoning framework and set timelines for primary elections.
