Vice President Kashim Shettima told Poland's Deputy Prime Minister on Thursday that Nigeria is ready to strengthen partnerships across defence, agriculture, and the digital economy, areas where the Eastern European nation has proven expertise.

Dr Krzysztof Gawkowski, Poland's Minister of Digital Affairs, visited the Presidential Villa in Abuja for talks that signal both countries' intent to move beyond aid-dependent relationships toward mutual business benefit. Shettima said there is significant room for improved relations in sectors where Poland leads, including shipbuilding, maritime industries, defence manufacturing, and digital innovation.

The Vice President used the meeting to highlight economic reforms the Tinubu administration has implemented over two years. He pointed to the liberalisation of Nigeria's foreign exchange market, the removal of petroleum subsidies, and harmonised tax laws designed to prevent companies from being overtaxed when they invest in Nigeria. "President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has unlocked the full potential of the Nigerian economy," Shettima said, framing these changes as evidence that Nigeria is serious about attracting foreign investment.

Shettima emphasised that Nigeria seeks partnerships built on mutual benefit rather than dependency. "We believe in a truly beneficial relationship rather than reliance on any country for aid," he said. He also praised Poland as one of Europe's most progressive and strategic nations, pledging improved cooperation between the governments and peoples of both countries.

Gawkowski reciprocated the optimism, describing Nigeria as Poland's most strategic partner across the African continent. He noted that Nigeria possesses enormous demographic potential and technological capacity, making it a natural choice for Poland's development and long-term cooperation goals. The Polish minister said his visit was meant to signal new momentum for cooperation in economics, innovation, and digitisation.

Both sides have indicated they will explore concrete partnerships in coming months, with discussions expected to advance in defence collaboration and digital sector development.
