Nigeria's Minister of Marine and Blue Economy Adegboyega Oyetola will join maritime industry leaders on June 4 to discuss sustainable port operations and improved welfare for dockworkers at the 2026 Shipping Correspondent Association of Nigeria dockworkers' day.
The event takes place at Rockview Hotels in Apapa under the theme "Green Ports: Sustainable Practices for Dockworkers." It brings together Aminu Umar, president of the Nigerian Chamber of Shipping, and Adewale Adeyanju, immediate past President-General of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria and current Deputy President of the Nigeria Labour Congress.
SCAN organised the gathering to push conversations about environmentally responsible port operations, technology adoption, and better working conditions for dockworkers. The association said the dockworkers' day has remained critical for recognising how dockworkers contribute to Nigeria's economy.
"SCAN Dockworkers' Day serves as a platform to acknowledge the essential contributions of dockworkers to our economy, while also addressing the urgent need for sustainable practices in our ports," SCAN President Moses Ebosele and Organising Committee Chairman Yusuf Babalola said in a joint statement.
The initiative aligns Nigeria's port operations with global environmental standards while ensuring dockworkers benefit from the transition to greener, technology-driven maritime systems. As the global maritime industry evolves, dockworkers need relevant skills and tools to adapt to green port initiatives and digital transformation in shipping.
Umar will deliver the keynote address while Adeyanju chairs the occasion. The Managing Director of Nigerian Ports Authority, the Director-General of Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, the Executive Secretary of Nigerian Shippers' Council, and the Acting Managing Director of National Inland Waterways Authority will send goodwill messages. Other maritime value chain stakeholders will also participate.
