Petit backs Osimhen to break Chelsea’s number nine curse

Emmanuel Petit believes Victor Osimhen has the character to succeed where so many have failed in Chelsea's number nine shirt. The former Arsenal midfielder said the Nigerian striker possesses the mentality needed to end what has become a running joke at Stamford Bridge, where the number nine jersey has brought heartbreak to a long line of players.

Petit drew comparison to Didier Drogba, who wore the shirt with distinction during his time at Chelsea and became one of the club's greatest ever players. He argued that Osimhen's hunger and drive put him in a different category from the string of disappointing signings who came before him. "What makes a number nine at Chelsea work is not just talent," Petit said. "It is the mind. It is the character. Osimhen has both."

The number nine at Chelsea has been a graveyard for strikers. Andriy Shevchenko flopped spectacularly after a big-money move. Álvaro Morata struggled under pressure. Gonzalo Higuaín never settled. Even Romelu Lukaku, for all his goals elsewhere, could not silence critics at the club. Each arrival came with enormous expectation and each departure left supporters wondering what might have been.

Osimhen joined Chelsea on loan from Galatasaray last summer after his move from Napoli collapsed in the final days of the transfer window. The striker has had to rebuild his reputation after a shoulder injury derailed what should have been his big move to Europe's elite. His performances at Chelsea will determine whether he can finally be the man to shoulder the weight of that troubled shirt.

Petit's backing carries weight in football circles. He won the Premier League with Arsenal and understands what it takes to perform under the intense scrutiny that comes with playing for one of England's biggest clubs. His endorsement suggests that at least some observers believe Osimhen possesses something the others lacked. Whether that proves true will become clear as the season progresses and Osimhen faces the relentless demands of English football and the expectations that come with wearing number nine at Chelsea.
