Nigeria's Super Eagles will defend their Unity Cup title against Zimbabwe on Tuesday, May 26, at The Valley in London, kicking off at 7:30 p.m. Nigerian time as the four-nation tournament begins its five-day run.
The Eagles won last year's competition and return to England determined to keep the trophy, competing alongside Jamaica and India in a tournament that runs through May 30. A win against Zimbabwe sends Nigeria to the final on May 30, also at The Valley in Charlton, southeast London.
Nigeria has not beaten Zimbabwe in their recent encounters. The two sides have drawn each of their last three meetings, a record that will weigh on the Eagles' minds as they seek to regain dominance. Coach Eric Chelle sees this tournament as more than chasing silverware. The Malian tactician has framed the Unity Cup as a crucial testing ground for rebuilding Nigeria's national team ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers and other future competitions.
Chelle's 27-man squad reflects this approach, packed with fresh faces alongside some experienced players. Fourteen players showed up for Saturday evening's first training session in camp: Junior Ayobami, Al Ameen Tijani, Michael Alata, Adeoye Aderemi, Oputa Chibueze, Igboke Obinna, Elias Ocholi, Tosin Oyedokun, Philip Otele, Arthur Okonkwo, Femi Azeez, Owen Oseni, Tochukwu Nnadi, and Terem Moffi. Goalkeeper Francis Uzoho joined later, along with Chibuike Nwaiwu and Rafiu Durosinmi.
Several key players had not yet arrived when training began. Wilfred Ndidi, Moses Simon, Raphael Onyedika, Bruno Onyemaechi, Yira Sor, Akor Adams, Emmanuel Fernandez, and Ebenezer Akinsanmiro were all expected to report in the coming days as the squad assembled in full.
Zimbabwe's Warriors come to England with a youthful team selected by interim manager Tembo. The squad's most experienced players are Marvelous Nakamba, Marshall Munetsi, and Gerald Takwara, each with 38 caps for the national team. However, the Warriors will miss striker Tino Kadewere through injury, and have also lost Bill Antonio and Divine Lunga to withdrawal. Isheanesu Mauchi, Prosper Padera, and Washington Navaya were brought in as replacements, while teenager Abubakar Moffat could make his senior international debut.
In Nigeria, SuperSport on DStv will broadcast the match live. The winner advances to face either Jamaica or India in the final on May 30.
