Victoria Mboko storms into French Open second round with dominant victory

Victoria Mboko, the 19-year-old Congolese-Canadian tennis star, advanced to the second round of the French Open on Wednesday after dismantling Czech player Nikola Bartůňková 6-1, 6-2 in a masterclass display on the Roland Garros clay courts.

The ninth seed made light work of her opening match, dispatching Bartůňková in just 69 minutes. Mboko arrived in Paris fresh off a run to the final at the Strasbourg International tournament the previous week, and her form showed no signs of dipping as she took control from early in the match.

Bartůňková held her opening service game with a forehand winner, but that proved to be her only moment of real comfort. Mboko then reeled off six consecutive games to seize the first set in just over half an hour, hitting 12 winners during that dominant stretch.

The second set followed the same script. Although Bartůňková managed to break serve early, Mboko answered immediately with a counter-break of her own. From 3-2, the Canadian broke through again and closed out the match with an ace, securing her passage to round two.

Mboko's clinical performance was built on precision and aggression. She converted six out of ten break point opportunities and finished with 22 winners overall, a display that underlined why she has risen so quickly through the professional ranks.

With this win, Mboko now stands one victory away from matching her third-round appearance from her French Open debut last year. Her next challenge comes against Kateřina Siniaková, a veteran Czech player and two-time Olympic champion, in the second round.
